Live in darkness long enough and it becomes part of who we are.
Creating beauty in the darkest moments is my process. I seek to expose the depths of an internal mourning we cannot verbalize, to conceptualize a place forgotten in time when suffering was immortalized. The challenge is to accept these shadowed parts of ourselves, and perhaps for me to find some kind of self acceptance during the process. My goal is to inspire those who see my work, who see my performance, to let go… and find the beauty in their own darkness.
I find much of my inspiration in “gothic” romanticism paintings; and in some of my works I seek to recreate a modern interpretation of them. There are also elements of stigmatized eroticism that play a large role in what inspires me to create. The rope itself is not the subject of the images, it is merely a catalyst for eliciting an emotional response. It is the element that binds us to punishment, ends our suffering, and renders our bodies weightless.
The photos from this series are all printed on large 54” x 36” canvases and exhibited to be floating in minimal black framing.
